City on a Hill’s Adopt-a-Block ministry is modeled after an approach developed by the Los Angeles Dream Center and used successfully. In Phase I, teams of volunteers engage in “servant evangelism” going door-to-door in the neighborhood to meet people, identify their immediate needs and serve them. Our teams have mowed lawns, washed windows, moved furniture, made household repairs, and provided for the practical needs of young mothers and elderly residents in the blocks surrounding our site. We have also offered numerous large and small-scale children’s events. In Phase II, we are connecting our neighbors with local churches for ongoing support and discipleship; and in Phase III, we will provide vocational training to help them improve their lives economically.

The City on a Hill Health Clinic staffed by more than 100 volunteers, including doctors, nurses and health educators, offers free monthly health screenings and medical care. Hot meals are served, and individuals in need of food are provided with groceries, hygiene kits and warm winter clothing. Up to 250 people per month are being served through this program. They receive holistic care to address their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

Children’s Ministry is a high priority for City on a Hill. Many summer outreach events are offered, for example, a family barbecue with children’s activities and dramatic and musical presentations of the gospel that attracted 400 neighbors. Recently, a Christian boys club known as Royal Rangers established an outpost here, providing boys from the neighborhood with weekly mentoring, education, Bible study and recreational activities. Many parents in the blocks immediately surrounding our facility have expressed appreciation for our efforts, and have shared with us their concerns about the neighborhood and their priority needs. Their most frequent request is that we develop an after school program for children in grade school.

Our Pregnancy Screening Center serves young women grappling with crisis pregnancies, helping them to understand the new life forming within them, and sharing the love of Christ with them. Many not only have chosen physical life for their babies, but also have chosen to accept the gift of eternal life for themselves as a result of this ministry.

City College Milwaukee, our two-year Christian college, offers programs in urban ministry, biblical studies, and the educational requirements for credentials. An extensive survey in central city churches helped establish the curriculum for the college. Classes are taught primarily in the evenings, by a diverse group of professors most of whom have Master’s or Doctoral degrees. Hands-on involvement in the urban community is required of all full-time students, resulting in many hours of community service and evangelism in the surrounding area. A new relationship with the Carlson Institute of North Central University in Minneapolis enables our students to receive an accredited education.

Our Big Events enable us to come into relationship with those who live in our surrounding area. Our focus in the Big Events is to reach out to the families of the children we serve. This is a time of evangelistic celebration that is intended to be fun and provide an atmosphere of love at City on a Hill.  This is an opportunity for everyone to either serve or to be served. Volunteer opportunities are available for every event.  If your interested in becoming a volunteer, click herebbq 159 crop.jpg
